What is a Dance Step Sequence?

15th July 2010

At the end of some of the freestyles, it says Dance Step Sequence.
What is it?

A dance step sequence is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a bunch of pre-specified moves and turns that you have to perform in a certain order in order to pass the freestyle level. As you get better, the dance step gets harder, and you learn more turns. The goal of the dance step sequence is to help you gain more control over your edges and your skating.

For example, in freestyle four, you learn backward inside and outside three turns. These are part of a serpentine ("S" shape) dance step that consists of three turn/mohawk combinations.

You are graded on how much control you have, and how big you make the turns. Of course, if you’re on a wrong edge in the dance step, you get taken off.

Then in FS5, you learn lots of fun things, like brackets. These are also in the dance step.

Basically, they are the ISI equivalent of moves in the field, testing your ability to control yourself.

I hope this helped! :)

It is a series of field moves. It is a sequence of steps, turns, and edges. You may have learned parts of them in basics.

I can kind of remember ISI freestyle 2 dance step sequence. (counterclockwise)
2 forward crossovers, right over left
LFO to LFI, kind of going into the middle of the circle and out again
    RFI mohawk
    backwards cross behind
    backwards crossover
    backwards inside mohawk

The term "Dance Step Sequence" is definitely an Ice Skating Institute (ISI) term. Instead of requiring Moves in the Field or Figures for every skater, the ISI chose to include a Dance Step Sequence in their Freestyle tests.

Dance Step Sequences are a pre-definined pattern of steps on the ice for each test level, just like an Ice Dance. Every ISI skater must perform it as part of their Freestyle program.

The ISI Asia site has videos of each level’s Step Sequence online for review.
    http://www.isiasia.org/isiasia/video/freestyle_tests_standards.php

There are printed patterns (warning: out of date as to levels) available here:
    http://www.igfsu.org/ISIDanceStepSeq.htm
(These are old handbook diagrams, so don’t use them for testing – make sure you have the correct pattern for the right test, per the current handbook.)

The ISI Handbook ($25) includes patterns and descriptions of all tests and events. If you plan to test or compete in ISI, you should own your own CURRENT copy of the rulebook.
